The child would have been taken even if just walking alone near the water. Gators can run fast and with the surprise of their attack - you are in shock at the noise and suddenness.
As for signs, they are never heeded. Example: while working at Space Mountain 1981ish a little girl rode the roller-coaster (she was accompanied by her parents) when the rocket train rolled into the unload area her head was slouched (similar to most riders reactions) but when my buddy asked her to exit and no response he and another friend went into lifesaving mode with J.W. providing CPR to the hospital. The family was given a settlement and yes it too was a tragic loss.
If the parents had only heeded the warning spiels and signs - the little girl had a known heart defect.
And gators will secure their catch to be consumed later after a little decomposing.

Why is it suddenly news to the world that there are alligators in Florida? I hate that this tragedy occurred, but wake up people. Nature can be an unpredictable factor in any situation.

Crypt, "No Swimming" signs were posted, do you advocate, "Do Not Enter the Water" or "Beware of Alligators?"
Alligators are hid and attack hunters, a "Beware of Alligator" sign might have raised awareness, but would it really keep folks out of the water if they did not "see" the gator to begin with?

Most two year olds lack the skill set to read signs.

This senseless loss of a child's life, that could have been prevented with something as simple as warning signs, is particularly disturbing.

Before you concoct your conspiracy theory. The little boy had puncture wounds from the alligators jaws. Alligators will take their prey and hide it under a log to come back to later. Since the area was being searched, the alligator was most likely scared off from eating the child then.

" yet i will say that this in reading about gators does not fit their nature to grab anything, human, wildlife etc just too drown it."
well yeah they sorta do...they are more picky about what they eat though...but they also will protect their natural habitat...especially if there was a nest in the lagoon...they will protect their homes, so to speak.

Don't everybody get their panties in a wad:: This was a terrible tragedy, any nightmare could not be worse.Yet in saying, parents tried too wrestle child from gator, i would have done same in circumstance. Yet there are disturbing statements concerning incident. Father rushes to get a life guard? How many life guards are gonna jump in a murky pool or lake of water with knowledge of a gator near? Why was child near water anyway, parents included? I was reading this article on Washington Post but had timed out it stated for month. Anyway a spokesman stated that after body was found it was fully intact & a autopsy had been ordered. He also stated he was sure the gator drowned the child? I will stop at that, yet i will say that this in reading about gators does not fit their nature to grab anything, human, wildlife etc just too drown it.

Bestill, that's correct. Responsible parents are not necessarily helicopter parents and helicopter parents aren't necessarily responsible. My point is, parents are responsible for the children they bring into the world, regardless of parenting style.
