Responsible parents are not necessarily helicopter parents.

hope75 (view profile) Posted 3:36 pm, 06/15/2016 One difference may be that the zoo mom knew there were wild/dangerous animals in the vicinity of her child, and she still took her eyes off of him. I'm guessing the Disney parents from Nebraska weren't expecting alligators to be lurking in the Disney water.
Be that as it may, I still think the parents in both situations are ultimately responsible. It's your job as a parent to keep your kid out of the gorilla's enclosure, and it's your job as a parents to make sure your toddler isn't toddling around in water, in the dark, where the signs say "no swimming." Does it make the tragedy any less horrific or make them bad parents? Of course not. But your kids are your kids, YOUR responsibility. Not the zoo's, not Disney's, not the neighbor's, not the school's, and not the government's.
hope, you are so right! It's truly sad when tragedy such as this occurs. But people need to realize, just what "responsibility" means. Before one ends up learning the hard way.
So very tragic and heartbreaking. 😢

It gave the alligator a place to hide , there should have been huge warning signs about the drop off and the alligators.

I was surprised to learn during that news conference about the sudden drop, there should have been warning signs.

probably not kenc...although they were there as the little fella's dad tried to wrestle him away from the gators grip.
A report during a news conference stated that the 4 year old sister was in a play pen close by

Wonder if these poor parents knew their son was playing at the edge of a six foot drop off .

Stock the lagoon with electric eels. They don't like gators.

they didn't go swimming in the lake either.
I've no problem with responsible hunting...if there really is such a thing!

I don't go swimming in the lake.. Hunting alligators, I see noting wrong with it as long as its done in a responsible way, or any animal.

When i heard this story this morning, I was surprised that Disney didn't do stuff to keep gators out. Of course, if you look at an overhead shot of the whole lagoon, you see how big it is and how hard that would be.
On the upside, they will probably get free Disney for life for the whole family. Well, the remaining family. That's probably a value of several million dollars itself.

Before it was Orange County, it was known as Mosquito County.

| OMG its a nasty looking lagoon, who would go swimming in it. No one with an active brain would, or would they let their child go into the water.
Have you taken a good look at the Yadkin River and Kerr Scott Lake lately...they lagoon has fresh water tributaries going into it...no more nasty than what is right here in our own backyards in good ole Wilkes by gawd county
I don't see how people are blaming this on Disney.
I don't believe that everyone is blaming this on Disney...however, Disney could have just as easily put up signs that also indicated that alligators were and are in the lagoon.
You are in Florida, well know for gators,
I'm sure this family from Nebraska understand that there are gators in Fla...but more than likely didn't think of gators being in the Magic Kingdom...
resorts built in the natural habitat of these animals.
It's not just resorts that build in the natural habitat of animals...if anyone builds in Florida no matter what they are building...they are infringing upon natural habitats of these and many more animals.
A few months ago, Florida Wildlife issued licenses to hunt bears...almost 300 bears were killed...even lactating mothers...now the cubs are left to die!
Then you have the ones that are blaming this on the alligators them self and saying we should eliminate them...
No really, gators are just doing what gators do...survive! It's mating season, gators migrate from one body of water to another to build their nest and lay eggs
Why because we build in there habitat, so they are invading our lives.. really people....
yes really!!!! | tears for all...

Very sad and tragic. I'm just glad that the child's body was recovered and his family has some peace. Keep this family in your thoughts and prayers. God knows that they will need it.

I think the difference may be in the outcome. It's easier when the outlook for the child is good to say "o.k. parents be more careful next time", but when the outlook is as grim as it is here, then it's hard to not feel bad saying "parents you should have been more careful".
