My parents always put slices of hot dog in it. Some good sausage might make it better.

Best way to eat sauerkraut: throw it in the trash. Hee hee.

I'll eat a lot of things. Sauerkraut isn't one of them. I can't get over how it smells like a sour, mildewed, pickled shoe.

Like backwater said, do it in layers.

We did it in a big old crock.

Then put in jars to can.

Always use kosher salt. And a pound per cabbage head should be enough

Add cabbage loosely,1 teaspoon salt,fill qt jar with water. Do not over fill qt jar with cabbage because the kraut has to work. If done properly you can see the top of lid has salty water on outside in a couple days.may even run down side of jar.

My mom and dad used to make it in a large crock. I sure wished I could find their recipe. We would go to Sparta and buy cabbage, then they worked it until it was ready to can. Always the best sauerkraut ever!!!
